With the evolution of Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites, people have given up on the bar scene and have turned to cyber space to find true love. Think it's uncommon for people to meet through the Internet? Think again. According to Forrester Research Inc, the online dating industry earned $957 million in 2008 alone, making it the third highest revenue grossing industry.

And it's not just divorcés and 40-somethings who are turning to the Internet. Growing populations of college kids are giving it a shot. After her sister found love online, senior Robin Dixon decided to try it out, so she set up a personal account on Yahoo! Personals and Craig's List.

"It's a good way to meet people if you're not into the bar scene," she said. "A lot of guys you meet out at a bar aren't looking for a relationship."

She recommends Craig's List because it's easy to use, free and is frequented by a younger crowd.

"You post an ad, and people respond to it through email. If you think they seem cool, you can email them back If not, you can just delete them. It's pretty easy, actually," Dixon said. "I met a few cool guys on there, which was nice."

About six months after she posted her ad, she met her boyfriend and has been dating him for about two months now.

"My friends thought I was crazy, but they were impressed when I met my boyfriend through Craig's List," she said. "It's a great way to meet people. Without the Internet, I probably wouldn't have met my boyfriend."

Senior Adam Deutsch turned to online dating because he found it was difficult to meet people as a commuter.

"Because I don't live on campus, I don't have a constant pool of people surrounding me to meet so I've got to go out and actually meet new people which, in this city, is very difficult because it is so incredibly cliquey. You really have to wow a girl with charm, boldness and cleverness to get them to open up to you here," Deutsch said.

"The reason I decided to try the online thing was simply to open up other avenues to meet people and like-minded girls who are looking for a relationship."

Deutsch used plentyoffish.com and while he met a few girls, the relationships only went as far as friendship. He hasn't found love yet, but he still thinks it's a great way to get to know people.

"You can get to see what the girl is like just by reading what they say about themselves. This saves you time and you can qualify who you like quickly and who just wouldn't be for you as well," he said.

Thinking about trying online dating? Dixon has an important tip to keep in mind.

"Be careful about who you meet, don't do it right away. Bring a friend with you every time you meet someone, because you never know. The person who sends you the picture may not be that person." (article source CardinalCourierOnline)

Casual Dating Sites are more and more popular. People are easier to flirt online then in a real life. Speed dating and casual sites are growing in attendance and activity.

For example, OnlineBootyCall, the world’s number one destination for casual online dating, today announced that it has proudly reached a momentous milestone: three million members and counting. From its inception in 2003, the site has experienced phenomenal growth, adding both thousands of new registered users and making more than 40,000 bootycall connections daily. In fact, in just a six-week period, from January 1st through Valentine’s Day weekend, the site has experienced a 38% year-over-year growth.

From today’s television lineup to our favorite magazines, it is clear that people’s dating patterns have changed. More and more people are interested in casual, fun dating rather than getting involved with someone too quickly. In addition, with the average person spending an average of 32.7 hours a week online (IDC), it is not surprising that more and more singles are trying to find a date online. In fact, U.S. online dating revenues are estimated to reach $1.32 billion in 2009, up from $1.18 billion in 2008 (eMarketer/Piper Jaffray).

“One online dating sector that is growing exponentially is the group of people interested in casual dating,” said Moses Brown, founder and president of OnlineBootyCall.com. “We understand that not everyone is looking for a serious relationship and our numbers don’t lie. Our three million member milestone demonstrates that millions of singles in the U.S. and abroad are turning to OnlineBootyCall.com to put the fun back into dating.”

In the past decade, the concept of a bootycall has thoroughly changed. From being a slang term in the 1990s, bootycalls have made their way into popular culture and people’s lives. Traditionally, people have used the telephone to place bootycalls, but over the last ten years, the rise in popularity of using IM, chat, text message or e-mail and OnlineBootyCall.com has made it even easier to connect with like-minded singles.

Since the site launched in 2003, more than 75 million bootycall connections have been made. OnlineBootyCall.com’s three million members come together on the site to communicate and date in a casual, light hearted and fun way where they’re in the driver’s seat. The site aims at taking the complexity out of dating and was created as a tongue-in-cheek response to stuffy dating sites that promise perfect matches but rarely deliver.
